Driven by the motto: "Engaging, Equipping and Empowering," The TAB (Christian Tabernacle Church) has a 33 year history of community building and service in Washington, DC. Directly tied to the greater U Street Community, this site is uniquely suited to become a new gathering place for a culturally diverse, thriving neighborhood. The site has access to considerable amenities on U Street, has direct walking access to Metro and is within walking distance of Howard University. Our development's goal is to strengthen these existing community bonds by providing high-quality, equitable housing opportunities that coexist with the current context.
The three and four story bays engage the existing rowhome context on 10th Street, allowing the seven story apartment building to feel set back. Designed with warm-tone brick as the main element, and with a diverse unit mix from studios to three-bedroom apartments, this new neighborhood anchor will provide housing for a wide range of residents. A 7,000+ square foot Child Development Center will occupy portions of the lower floors, with direct drop-off access on V Street. At its entry, a new community plaza, will be a space for children to arrive and gather safely. This entry will be cladded with vibrant shades of purple, as a nod to The TAB's current color palette. Children will also be able to play in a secure, raised outdoor play area adjacent to the Church.
Our design received approval from DC's Historic Preservation Review Board and is currently working on other applications required to secure funding.
