This year - the intern studio focused on responding to the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development's (DMPED) request for proposals for the property 427 – 439 New Jersey Avenue, NW – Ward 2. The challenge of the site was to keep the existing historic Engine Company 3 firehouse and attached museum on site, preserving the historic façade while adding additional programmatic density.
The proposed development solution is a new multi-use building that not only brings much needed housing to students and interns on Capitol Hill, but also retail and office space that can add and accommodate the many needs of this hustle and bustle part of the district. Located a short walk from both Georgetown University's law campus and the United States Capitol, along with the many other government office buildings in the area, this building will provide students and interns with affordable housing that is convenient to their area of focus in a neighborhood lacking options.
Its design is mindful of the existing firehouse and its extensive history of serving the nation’s capital by leaving its structure and program untouched for many to admire in the years to come. Its simple new brick façade simply wraps around the firehouse, recognizing its traditional architectural style, while a secondary, modern, curtain-wall mass cuts through the building. Its protruding front angled massing, as well as the multiple outdoor amenities, provides residents and office workers alike with a great view of the Capitol. The building has both housing and office programming to take advantage of the 9.0 FAR bonus density on the site - while a garage underneath serves the needs of the facility.
