"This project adds 400% to the pipeline for affordable assisted living in Washington, DC," Binite stated in his opening remarks.

By adding 152 units to the pipeline, the total number of affordable assisted living units in DC increases to 185. Livingston Place is the first affordable assisted living community of its kind in Ward 8.

Mayor Bowser, spoke of her office's goal to build 36,000 new housing units by 2025, including a strong emphasis on expanding the District's offerings for seniors.

"It is our challenge to make sure that we are remembering every resident in our city. The truth is, we have a lot more to do for our seniors when it comes to housing. Seniors who have worked and saved cannot afford year to year increases on housing with a fixed income," Mayor Bowser said as she addressed Ward 8 residents, the project design team, and all who were involved in the development of the project.

Approximately 113,000 Washingtonians are 60 years or older. According to Ed Broderick, CEO of Gilbane Development, about half of that population are overburdened by the cost of housing. As Broderick pointed out, Livingston Place can help "reduce reliance on nursing home care, and create jobs" for our local communities. Livingston Place alone will have 40+ full-time staff when it is operational.

Livingston Place at Southern has been made possible by many dedicated financing agencies working together to find the most innovative and efficient way to make this project possible. Buwa Binitie, spoke to the responsibility of this project team in his closing remarks:

"Here in America, particularly in DC, we have a lot to offer. And to whom much is given, much is expected. We are supposed to use the resources we have to provide for those who do not have."

Livingston Place at Southern is currently under construction, with an estimated completion of early 2021.
