Please join us in celebrating the end of another great year at Soto Architecture and Urban Design!  As always, we could not have achieved anything without our faithful partners, local community, and passionate people.  Some highlights of this year include:

Completed Projects
​
This year we completed The Lewis, a senior apartment community in Suitland, Maryland. this Project has a total of  137 Units, with a focus on providing accessible homes for seniors.     
We also are currently wrapping up the Woodmore Apartments.  Woodmore is a market-rate development with five four-story buildings with 268 apartments. Public amenities include a party room, fitness room, and other private gathering spaces.

Woodmore is a market-rate development with five four story buildings with 268 apartments. Public amenities include a party room, fitness room, and other private gathering spaces.

Location: Glenarden, MD

Project Info: 268 Units | 287,000sf | 5 Residential Buildings + Clubhouse

The Lewis
​
The Lewis is a 137 unit senior development that embraces the design principles of New Urbanism and compliments the objectives of the Mixed-Use Town Center zoning requirements. The building faces the town square, encouraging seniors to participate in civic and cultural activities. A senior services center occupies a significant portion of the ground floor that will provide social and medical referral services to the community. The top floor includes a community room and outdoor roof garden.
 
Location: Suitland, MD
Developer: Mission First HDC & Prince George's County RDA
Builder: Bozzuto Construction
Construction Cost: $23,000,000
Project Info: 137 Units, 111k sf, 6 Stories

Harvard Hall

Harvard Hall is a 182 unit multifamily housing project undergoing a full gut renovation. This project is targeting leed gold certification with an upgraded envelope, high efficiency mechanical systems, and a new 100kw Solar Array.

Project Info: 182 units | 199,769 sf | 7 stories | Type I Construction, with alternation on level 3



Park Montgomery

Park Montgomery is both a renovation of an existing affordable High rise and a new construction of an affordable mid-rise. 

Project Info: Renovation: 141 Units | 160,000 sf | 15 stories 
                      New Construction: 76 Units | 112,000 sf | 7 stories


 
Park Morton

Park Morton is composed of two buildings of new construction mixed-income development. The first building is a 142-unit, 5-story apartment building with exterior courtyards, The second building is a smaller 6 unit townhome-style building.

The Residences at Springbrook 

Springbrook is a 90 unit senior housing project that creates a community space for seniors in Clinton, Maryland

Project Info: 90 Units | 84,800 sf | 4 stories

Cold Spring Lane

Cold Spring Lane is a transit-oriented development with 165 new family housing units. The project is adjacent to the Cold Spring Lane Metro Station and follows the urban character of the site by facing all of the surrounding streets and having the main entrance pointing to the connection to this station.

1201 Jefferson

1201 Jefferson is a 47 unit multifamily housing project with a focus on biophilic design. Each unit features  a balcony with a built-in planter box, a juliet balcony, or a rooftop patio, to allow residents access to greenspace.

Project Info: 47 units in total; 2 studios, 26 one-bedroom, 16 two-bedroom, and 3 three-bedroom units

The People of Soto

Our people are the straw that stirs the drink.  2022 led to many new and exciting opportunities, including:
This year we welcomed three new employees to Soto.
  • Gabriella Adorno joined us as an architectural intern from Catholic University. This summer she completed her Bachelor’s of Science in Architecture.
  • Abigail Bullock joined us as an architectural intern from the University of Maryland School of Architecture. This summer she completed her Bachelor’s of Science in Architecture and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History.
  • Ciara Bonilla McChesney joined us as an intern. She recently graduated from High School and is currently taking a gap year.

This year, we promoted several well deserving employees.
  • Kyle Huck was promoted to an Associate at Soto. Originally joining us as an Intern Kyle,  continues to be a vital part of our team
  • Harry Webb was promoted to an Associate at Soto. After rejoining our team as a project manager Harry has continued to shown an exceptional level of skill
  • Pedro Camargo was promoted to Soto’s Design Director at Soto. Pedro continues to share his love of architecture both through his work here at Soto, and his teaching position at the University of Maryland.
  • Joe Ijjas was promoted to Senior Associate at Soto. Joe has proven himself as an essential part of the Soto team over 7 years of service.
  • Joe Iwaskiw was promoted to Senior Associate. Joe has Continued to be the backbone of our team and has worked for Soto for a total of 7 years.

These great people helped lead us to many awesome events and awards throughout the year.
  • This year our project Livingston Place was awarded an Award of Excellence. In addition, Livingston Place was awarded the Golden Nugget Merit Award for Best Affordable Senior Housing Community.
  • 22 Light Street was also  awarded an Award of Excellence. In addition it has been chosen for the 2022 Montgomery County Affordable Housing Conference.
  • Our founder Fernando spoke at Architect Magazine’s Architect Live. His session “Designing For Office To Resi Conversions”, details the process of converting existing office spaces into residential units.
  • Our interns participated in our first ever immersive studio program. This opportunity allows our interns to gain more experience working jobs that they otherwise might not have an opportunity to at this point in their career.
  • We completed our first case study on our Ivy City Men’s Shelter RFP submission.  The research on trauma-informed design will help all of our projects moving forward.
  • Soto had several team-building events with the goal of increasing company teamwork. This summer we added a new tradition, our summer outing. We also recently had our company holiday party

What is coming in 2023?

2023 presents many new opportunities for our team.  We are excited to wrap up two projects, 17 Mississippi Ave Apartments and the Delta 2 Towers Renovation in Spring 2023. We also have a number of RFP’s we are looking forward to the new year. ​

17 Mississippi Ave

17 Mississippi is a 6-story 41 unit project. This building has a mix of family sized units, affordable units, artist housing, and permanent supportive housing.

Location: Ward 8, Washington, DC
Developer: NHP Foundation
Builder: Hamel Builder
Construction Type: Four stories of wood over two levels of concrete
Date of Completion: December 2022
Project Info: 41 Units | 43,000sf | 6 Stories

Delta Towers

This project is a multifamily housing renovation project with 166 apartments. This project includes updated fixtures and equipment designed to meet the New building Energy Performance Standard Requirements.

Location: Washington, DC
Developer: Dantes Partners and Gilbane Development
Builder: Commercial Construction
Date of Completion: October 2022
Project Info: 166 Units | 166,000sf | 10 stories
